Three people-search listing cards for a current name, former name and previous city, beside a confirmation email and a four-step checklist for finding, submitting, verifying and rechecking each listing

How to Opt Out of Spokeo

The hardest part of a Spokeo opt-out may be finding every listing that belongs to you. A search under one name and city can miss a separate profile associated with an older address, another name or a different spelling.

The practical method is simple: make a list of the matching profile URLs first, submit a removal request for each one, confirm the requests by email and check the results later. Do not assume that removing one listing removes every listing.

Build the list before you submit anything

Search Spokeo for your full name and current city. Repeat with previous cities, former names, nicknames, longer or shorter first-name forms, and versions with or without a middle initial. Check each result carefully: a similar name does not necessarily mean the listing belongs to you.

Copy the URL of each listing that genuinely matches you. Keep a separate tracking list for each household member. This search-variant method and tracking table are Nesswick editorial recommendations, not a procedure Spokeo promises will find every record.

Submit a request for each listing

Use Spokeo’s official public-listing opt-out page: https://www.spokeo.com/optout. The documented workflow asks for the specific listing URL and an email address used to confirm the request. Follow the instructions and any verification steps displayed on the live form. Then open the confirmation email and complete the confirmation link. Check your spam folder if the message does not arrive.

Repeat for each matching profile URL. The official opt-out tool is a request to remove a public listing, not a guarantee that every underlying source record will be erased.

Do not upload identity documents or provide extra personal information unless an authentic, clearly explained official process actually requires it. The standard public-listing form is commonly documented as requesting a listing URL and confirmation email; additional information may be relevant to separate statutory privacy-rights requests.

Check whether the listing disappeared

Spokeo’s public opt-out process has commonly described a processing target of about 24–48 hours after confirmation, but this is not a guaranteed deadline. Allow time for processing, then revisit the original profile URL and rerun your name-variant searches. If you see a result, try a private browser window to rule out a locally cached page.

If a matching listing remains visible, use the contact or support options currently published by Spokeo and provide the relevant profile URL and request details.

Suppression is not the same as erasing every source

Spokeo’s opt-out concerns the visibility of public listings on its website. It does not remove information from independent third-party sources, and new or updated records may result in another listing later. That is why the list of URLs and search variants is worth keeping. Recheck periodically, such as every three to four months, and submit a fresh request for any new matching profile.

California residents have an additional option: DROP

California’s official Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) accepts one request intended for participating registered data brokers. It launched for consumers in January 2026; brokers began processing requests in August 2026. Brokers must check requests at least every 45 days, and status updates may take up to 90 days. Eligibility requires California residency, and a broker may report that information was deleted, exempt, opted out, not found or pending. A DROP request does not guarantee that every broker will find or delete every record. Use the official state site: https://privacy.ca.gov/DROP/.

Three questions about Spokeo removal

Why do I still see a listing? It may be a different profile, a cached result or a request that has not yet been processed. Check the exact URL, email confirmation and a private browser window.

Is the underlying information deleted? Public-listing suppression does not, by itself, establish deletion from independent source records. California DROP provides a separate legal deletion-request mechanism for eligible residents.

Do I need a paid subscription? The public opt-out workflow does not require purchasing a Spokeo report. Do not pay merely to request removal of a public listing. Confirm the live instructions before proceeding.
